SUMMARY:

Bing, bing, bing! Who doesn't love the sound of the slots? People love to gamble, even in our current economic climate it's alive and well. It's one thing to gamble knowingly but you'd be surprised how many of us are gambling with what is called, the silent killer.

Despite our current economic climate, gambling is alive and well. What was once only offered in large cities can now be found in local communities alongside racetracks, hotels and concert outlets. It’s apparent by counting heads at the entry doors and slot machine rooms that people love to gamble, and that’s exactly what they are doing if they also have high blood pressure. For the most part people don’t realize they have high blood pressure because it does not always present any symptoms or signs. If it does, it and can be felt through neck and head aches but they can and often are easily mistaken for something else.

The only way to check your blood pressure is to have it tested. Once you are alerted to the fact there is a problem, medication could be provided but even so, it is in your best interest to check your pressure often. Blood pressure cuffs are readily available from health care retailers, and many stores now offer a testing machine that can be used at no cost in the store. What is a good score? Anything close to, or below 130 for the higher number and 85 or less for the lower level; 125/80 would be an average reading.

There are nine specific actions you can do to improve and lower your blood pressure, they are:
• Reduce and monitor your weight
• Reduce and monitor your alcohol intake
• Reduce and monitor the amount of salt you use
• Increase eating foods with potassium; fruits, vegetables, nuts
• Do not smoke, quit!
• Rest more and learn to relax; find ways to cope with stress
• Find activities that are suitable for you and exercise 3 times a week
• Follow medications regiments correctly
• If need be, purchase a self testing cuff and use it

All good gamblers are mindful of their betting odds; winning is the goal after all. Be a smart gambler, make sure the odds are in your favor; check your blood pressure.
